PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced a new domestic tournament which will be played in all three formats. The Champions Cup will consist of five teams participating in 3 tournaments in a year. Chamipons Cup ODI, Champions Cup T20, and Champions Cup Pentangular. All domestic and centrally contracted players will participate in the tournaments.
Mohsin Naqvi‘s aim in starting this tournament:
“Our current standings—sixth in Tests, fourth in ODIs, and seventh in T20Is. Do not reflect the true potential and legacy of Pakistan cricket. To restore our rightful place at the top of world cricket, we must innovate and strategically enhance, expand, and strengthen our domestic structure. The introduction of the three Champions tournaments is a bold step in this direction.”
Mentors for every team:
PCB has announced the mentors for each five teams. Misbah Ul Haq, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed, Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq are selected as the mentors. They are the most expereinced and well know cricketers. Young players will get a golden opportunity to play under such great mentorship.
All five players are legends of Pakistani cricket. If we talk about Waqar Younis, he is no doubt one of the best fast bowlers the world has seen. Saqlain Mushtaq, the inventor of Doosra, was a magical off-spinner of his ERA who didn’t let the batters play him. Misbah Ul Haq is one of the best captains in Pakistan cricket’s history. Sarfaraz Ahmed is the Champions Trophy-winning captain. Shoaib Malik is one of the fittest players in cricket; he had a career of 21 years.
In the first phase, the ODI Champions Cup will start on September 11. Straight away after Bangladesh’s test series, the tournament will start. All the centrally contracted players and domestic performers will get a chance to play this first Champions Cup tournament. Stadiums are being finalised for the matchers. Iqbal Stadium Faisalabad is considered for this tournament.
